The numerous stupas, temples, monasteries and an Ashokan pillar have been the focus of interest and awe for global audiences as well. Day 13 - Indore & Burhanpu

After breakfast drive to Burhanpur. Burhanpur was once the cultural capital of the Mughals. Its architectural gems have inspired the Taj Mahal

and other iconic monuments. One of the finest examples of Burhanpur’s secular spirit can be seen at the Jama Masjid, which has a beautifully carved mihrab (niche) with inscriptions in both Arabic and Sanskrit.

The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan is said to have spent a lot of time in Burhanpur. He was the one who added the famous hamam (royal bath) to the Shahi Qila, so that his wife, Begum Mumtaz Mahal could enjoy luxurious baths. Mumtaz Mahal is said to have died in this palace during childbirth. In his grief, Shah Jahan wanted to build the Taj Mahal in Burhanpur but due to the lack of marble, it had to be built in Agra.

Today, Burhanpur is famous for three things—kela (banana), kapda (cloth), aur kapaas (cotton). Later visit of ASIRGARH FORT: DOORWAY TO THE DECCAN. Steeped in legends, a strategically located hilltop fort coveted by generations of rulers. Asirgarh was one of the seven unconquered forts of India. Return to hotel for overnight stay.
